Liga MB Round 19: Top-ranked San Salvador wins another game

Liga MB top team - San Salvador (14-1) managed to deliver another win on Sunday. This time they beat fifth ranked Brujos (9-7) in Izalco 91-76. San Salvador looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when San Salvador made 16 blocks. Worth to mention a great performance of Eduardo Escalante (181-1993) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 21 points, 6 rebounds and 11 assists. Roberto Martinez contributed with 19 points and 7 assists for the winners. Maxwel Mendoza answered with a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!), 10 rebounds and 5 assists for Brujos. San Salvador have an impressive series of fourteen victories in a row. They maintain first place with 14-1 record. Brujos at the other side keep the fifth position with seven games lost. San Salvador are looking forward to face league's second-placed Santa Tecla at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Brujos will play against Nejapa and are hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
The game in was also worth to mention about. Third ranked Metapan (12-3) played at the court of 8th ranked Santiagueno (5-10). Metapan managed to secure a 6-point victory 92-86. It was a great evening for Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-1994) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds. Maurice Taylor helped adding 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. At the losing side Cuban guard Pedro Roque (187-1995) responded with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists. Metapan maintains third place with 12-3 record having just two points less than leader San Salvador. Santiagueno lost their third game in a row. They keep the eighth position with ten games lost. Metapan will play against Santa Ana (#7) on the road in the next round. Santiagueno will have a break next round.

Higher ranked Santa Ana was outleveled at home by tenth ranked Cojute 125-74 on Saturday. It was an exceptional evening for Andravious Smith who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 42 points (!!!), 20 rebounds and 9 assists. EJ Blackwell came up with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists for Santa Ana in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cojute moved-up to ninth place. Santa Ana lost their fourth game in a row. They dropped to the seventh position with nine games lost. Cojute will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Santa Ana will play against Metapan (#3) and hope to secure a win.

In the last two games of round 19 Brujos was beaten by Aguila on the road 95-78. Fantasmas destroyed Chalchuapa on its own court 98-79.



Aguila - Brujos 95-78

There was a small surprise when fifth ranked Aguila (9-5) beat their close opponent Brujos (9-7) in San Miguel 95-78 on Saturday. Aguila looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was an exceptional evening for guard Bryan Garcia (168-1997) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. Cuban Lisvan Valdez (196-1988) accounted for 23 points and 5 rebounds for the winning side. Five Aguila players scored in double figures. Maxwel Mendoza came up with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and center Teodoro Romero (202-1985) added 21 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Brujos in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Aguila. They moved-up to fourth place. Loser Brujos keep the fifth position with seven games lost. Aguila will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Brujos will play against Nejapa (#10) and hope to secure a win.

Santiagueno - Metapan 86-92

Metapan dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Santiagueno's 44. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 29 assists. It was a great evening for Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-1994) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds. American forward Maurice Taylor (198-1994, college: Niagara) helped adding 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Taylor is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. At the losing side Cuban guard Pedro Roque (187-1995) responded with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists and American-Colombian center Freddy Asprilla (206-1988, college: Canisius) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Four Metapan and five Santiagueno players scored in double figures. Metapan maintains third place with 12-3 record having just two points less than leader San Salvador. Santiagueno lost their third game in a row. They keep the eighth position with ten games lost. Metapan will play against Santa Ana (#7) on the road in the next round. Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Santa Ana (5-9) and Cojute (4-12), which took place in Santa Ana. Higher ranked Santa Ana was outleveled at home by tenth ranked Cojute 125-74 on Saturday. Cojute dominated down low during the game scoring 78 of its points in the paint compared to Santa Ana's 32 and made 17-of-21 free shots (81.0 percent) during the game. Cojute forced 22 Santa Ana turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists comparing to just 16 passes made by Santa Ana's players. It was an exceptional evening for American swingman Andravious Smith (196-1995, college: Tougaloo) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 42 points (!!!), 20 rebounds and 9 assists. His fellow American import guard Jordon Myers (201-1998) accounted for 33 points (!!!), 12 rebounds, 9 assists and 6 steals for the winning side. Very expected game when 11th ranked Chalchuapa (2-13) was smashed by sixth ranked Fantasmas (6-9) in San Vicente 98-79 on Sunday. Fantasmas outrebounded Chalchuapa 53-39 including a 40-28 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was an exceptional evening for Cuban point guard Osmel Oliva (180-1987) who led the winners with a triple-double by scoring 28 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists and 4 steals (made all of his nine free throws !!!). American forward Ron Lawton (196-1995, college: NMHU) accounted for 21 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists for the winning side. Five Fantasmas players scored in double figures. American Gorg Alhag (190-1997, college: Mayville St.) came up with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists and Erick Rojas (183-1996) added 32 points and 6 rebounds respectively for Chalchuapa in the defeat. Fantasmas maintains sixth place with 6-9 record. Loser Chalchuapa stay at the bottom position with 13 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
